Starting a Blog

Well I've decided to blog about my trip. Not in a toolish way, mentioning what ice cream I ate today or describing in detail every cute English boy I see, but a travel diary of sorts so family and friends know where I am and what I am doing (and learning). Hopefully I will keep up with it and it will be a success. We shall see.

I have been here long enough to go to two of my schools, Kent and St. John's, to check them out. Canterbury where I will be the longest is a great town. It has the religious influence of the Cathedral, the European influence of the pilgrims past and present, and the hip side from the colleges in the area. I think I will like it a lot. Especially because they have H&M and Top Shop.

Oxford is not what I expected at all. I kind of pictured colleges on a hill surrounded by mist and silence, not that. It is very metropolitan and touristy but beautiful and quiet inside each college gate. We saw Shakespeare in the garden, Romeo and Juliet. It was fabulous. Mercutio as always was my favorite. The most interesting thing was he played him gay. Never seen that before, but added an element and I don't think it was much of a stretch for the actor, so he pulled it off well. It was set in 1950s in Oxford, a feud between the townie Montagues and the college Capulets.

Lizzie and Elizabeth, I've found most of the things y'all suggested. Still on search for the Purple Turtle. We ate at Eagle and Child where C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien used to chill. I signed the credit slip V.H. Johnson. I'm ready for my literary masterpiece to flow out now. We saw the dining all from Harry Potter, 1 and 2, and a lot of the city. Great town and its going to be a great experience.

cheers.

  2. The BLOG is great--I'm really enjoying keeping up. Unfortunately, I couldn't get it to open from FB, so your dad had to send it to me (he's so sweet). I wish you'd gotten to see Prince Harry, but it may not be too late yet!! I'm not really surprised that Chas. was boring (I think Diana thought so, too)! ANYway, this is all very interesting! Keep up the good work, and take care of yourself!
